Material Girl

With Material Girl I wanted the fabric to be the protagonist. Quilted denim treated as couture, sharp pink suiting turned theatrical; I kept the backdrops bare so the textiles could do all the talking. Every look is an argument for material as attitude: the quilted denim column dress reworked like an evening gown, the sage tailoring softened by a single lacquered heel, and the sculpted pink power suit that carries the whole story on its shoulders. Nothing to distract, nothing to hide behind; just cloth, form, and posture.

Here are two poems I wrote:
I. Quilted
Denim taught to hold a shape
it never asked to keep;
diamond seams, a slow blue drape,
couture from something cheap.
I wear the cloth. The cloth wears me.
We argue who’s the muse.
The backdrop, bare, agrees to be
the silence fabric uses.
II. Pink, Structured
Shoulders squared against the room,
a suit built like a stance.
No apology, no perfume;
just tailoring’s advance.
Soft color, hardest line,
the bluff no one can call:
sweet as candy, sharp as spine,
material, that’s all.
I’m featured on both the front and back covers of the new Beauty issue of Selin Magazine; Issue 66, Vol. 39. Both editorials in this issue, “Material Girl” and “The Blue Hour,” were solo productions: I was the wardrobe stylist, creative director, model, makeup artist, hair stylist, retoucher, and photographer.

I called it The Blue Hour because that’s the honest part of the day; when I stop holding myself together for anyone and just exist. Bare skin. Damp hair. Denim. Me, without the edit.
Where my last SELIN story (“Material Girl”) let the fabric do all the talking, this one strips everything back to the face. No styling to hide behind, minimal makeup, natural light. The whole point was to see what’s left when you take the production away.
And like always, this was a full solo production; creative direction, styling, hair, makeup, modeling, retouching, and photography, all mine. Which makes a series this vulnerable feel even more personal: there was no one else in the room to hold myself together for.
Grateful to SELIN for being a home that cherishes individuality and gives real space to honest stories.
There is a moment the day forgets to watch,
when the light goes soft and asks nothing of me; no armor, no angle held just so,
only the quiet of being unobserved.
I wear the water in my hair like weather,
denim worn open, honest at the collar,
my face carrying no correction,
only the day it actually lived.
This is the hour I stop holding together.
The blue comes in. I let it.
And what is left when the performance ends
turns out to be the truest thing I’ve made.
I’m honoured to share that my editorial series Silver Silence has been published in Artego Magazine’s July Fine-Art & AI issue, appearing alongside an international lineup of artists and on the issue’s contents page.
Silver Silence began with a question: what happens when elegance stops performing? I wanted to take beauty out of its pristine settings and place it somewhere abandoned; somewhere the world had stopped maintaining; and see what remained.
The series lives in the tension between the soft and the ruined. The gown is liquid silver silk; everything around it is fractured plaster and paint dripping down the stairs in long, frozen rivulets. Yet the longer you look, the more they mirror each other; the folds of the fabric echo the drips on the steps, and figure and environment dissolve into a single palette, a single mood.

Decay is usually framed as loss. I wanted to frame it as patina; evidence that something has lived. The cracked walls aren’t the opposite of the gown’s beauty; they’re its context. One is beauty at its beginning, the other beauty long after everyone stopped watching.
Every stage of this project was my own; creative direction, styling, makeup, hair, retouching, and photography. A quiet series, made quietly.

Fun at the Car Wash- Published in Photohouse Magazine, Issue #177
One of my earliest and fondest memories is sitting beside my father as we drove through the car wash. Water rushed over the windows, soap swallowed the glass, and the brushes moved around us like we were passing through another world. From that safe little seat, I was mesmerised; the sounds, the lights, the way the outside simply disappeared for a moment.

This series is my return to that world. What felt magical to a child; the water, the foam, the light breaking through it all; becomes the visual language of these images. It’s a place where the ordinary turns surreal, if only for a few minutes.
